So what does Christianity actual say about tattoos? There is a lot of debate going on whether it is allowed to have tattoos on body in Christianity or if it is permanently banned? Some people even argue that Bible does not specifically mentions to not have tattoos. So the big question is that if it is sin to get a tattoo on body or does Our lord, our savior allows to modify our body with a body art form?
A devoted Christian who is against tattooing will always make reference to Leviticus 19:28 where it is specifically said to not have any kind of tattoo on your body. The exact verse is ”You shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor tattoo any marks on you: I am the Lord.”
Now this is a strong point to make because if Christianity allowed tattooing then there would not have been such verse in bible. But then again there are various versions of bible available.
We have to look at the bigger picture and the bigger picture is that more than 40 percent of millenials are having tattoos. This is a big number as opposed to baby boomers who only had 8 percent of total population having tattoos.
What does this signify? This means that as the society is advancing more and more people are accepting tattooing as a body art. Tattooed people are no longer seen as sinners or even rebels. In fact many people see tattoos as a significant part of a person’s personality that tells how a person thinks or acts.
Every Sunday I go to church I see more and more people coming with tattoos. But I learned a positive message from it? What is that? The people with tattoos are not seen with hate. In fact they are not discriminated on any level. After all this is what the main fundamental of Christianity is – Thou Shall love everyone irrespective of their race, religion, ethnicity or even their personality.
Love can change a person. Love can move a person from evil to god. So why to judge people with tattoos and why to hate them? In fact I have been encouraging people to get tattoos that are related to god. Many people showed up with cross tattoos, tattoos of bible verses and octopus tattoo designs. I found them really impressive.
However there is one thing that I want to share with people – To get tattoo or not is your own decision but if you have decided to get a tattoo then please be sure that you know that getting a tattoo is a responsibility. You are marking your body permanently so you do not want a foolish decision.
A tattoo that is done due to dare or out of love is often regretted later. Do not get a tattoo that you will regret later. In my opinion tattoos of heaven, cross, bible verse are really good. You should try them. If you are against tattooing then please rise up from hate and show our brothers and sisters that you will love them and consider them as a child of god no matter how they modify their body.
